Crochet Nesting Bowls for Quick Gifts

These crochet nesting bowls are a very simple and very quick gift to work up. I am using 100% cotton yarn, two strands at a time and a 5mm hook.

There are simpler ways to make these but I like a totally flat bottom, a defined edge, I like it with the inside bottom of the bowl showing the “right” side of the fabric as well as the “right” side of fabric showing on the outside of the bowl walls. All of the jiggery pokery is to achieve these goals in the pattern.

We will be using this general Flat Circle formula (the only difference is that we not joining at the ends of the rounds but working in a spiral).

Formula (actual pattern is below the first couple of pictures here):
Round 1: Xsc around (you can start with any number of stitches you’d like “X” represents your starting number).
Round 2: 2sc into each sc from previous round. X times
Round 3: 2sc between 2sc from previous round, sc into next st. X times
Round 4: 2sc between 2sc from previous round, sc into next st, sc into next st. X times
Round 5: 2sc between 2sc from previous round, sc into next st, sc into next st, sc into next st. X times
Further Rounds: continue the forumula, increasing each round with a sc at the end of every 2sc set.

Base Instructions:

Round 1: Make an adjustable ring, pull up a loop, ch1 to secure, sc 6 into ring. Pull ring closed tightly. Single crochet into back loop of the first sc from beginning (7 stitches). This ends the first Round and sets you up for working in a spiral.

Round 2: 2sc into next 7 stitches.

Round 3: 2sc into next st, 1sc into next (7 times). You can stop here for a small base or keep going to make a larger base.

Round 4: 2sc into next st, 1sc into next, 1sc into next (7 times). (The bowl in the instructional photos stops here…)

Round 5+: Continue to increase flat circle using this formula (2sc between each 2sc from previous Round, and single crochets for the rest of the set until the next 2sc). You can use this formula for blankets too and any other flat circle projects you are making.

Wall Instructions:

Round 1: Sc into next stitch, single crochet in front loops of each stitch around, turn. (Do not ch1 for turn!! A ch1 here creates an irregularity in the smooth wall).
Round 2+: Sc into first stitch and each stitch around. When you reach the end of the round, join with a sc to the first st of the round.
Continue sc into each stitch in continuous rounds until your reach desired wall height. I like the symmetry and shape created by making the same number of wall rounds as base rounds. By following this rule (base rounds=wall rounds), I can make nesting bowls by increasing one base round and one wall round with each consecutive bowl. Example: Bowl 1=3 base rounds and 3 wall rounds, Bowl 2=4 base rounds and 4 walls rounds, etc..

Sc into next stitch, single crochet in front loops of each stitch around, turn. This is the first round of the wall sides.	(Do not ch1 for turn!! A ch1 here creates an irregularity in the smooth wall).
Sc into first stitch and each stitch around.	When you reach the end of the round, join with a sc to the first st of the round. (Indicated by needle).
Continue sc into each stitch in continuous rounds until your reach desired wall height.	Use the Invisible Finish to create a seamless join when you are done making your bowl walls.
